Parrot Clay Lick Peru : 5-Day Tambopata & Sandoval Lake Jungle Tour
Wildlife Encounters :
The Tambopata Reserve is home to a staggering variety of wildlife. On guided hikes and boat rides, you may spot howler monkeys, capybaras, caimans, giant otters, sloths, and even elusive jaguars. Birdwatchers will be in paradise, with over 600 bird species recorded in the region.
Day 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado – Journey to Tambopata Lodge Inn
Welcome to your Amazon jungle adventure – Upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado Airport or bus terminal, our team will meet you and take you to our main office for a short briefing. You can store your unneeded luggage and bring only your essentials.
We then travel by private vehicle for two hours to Tambopata Port, where a motorized boat awaits. As we cruise the Tambopata River, keep an eye out for capybaras, white caimans, turtles, and perhaps even the elusive jaguar resting on the riverbanks.
Upon arrival at Tambopata Lodge Inn, you’ll be welcomed with a typical Amazonian drink. After check-in and lunch, we’ll explore the primary rainforest, encountering millenary trees, diverse insects, birds, monkeys, and more.
After dinner, we’ll take a night boat excursion to spot alligators, night monkeys, and nocturnal predators. Return to the lodge for a restful night.
Day 2: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick & Wildlife Museum Tour
Wake up early (5:00 AM) for one of the most spectacular wildlife experiences in Peru. We journey 1 hour 20 mins upstream on the Tambopata River, witnessing the sunrise and possibly spotting jaguars or anacondas.
Arriving at the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, hundreds of macaws, parrots, and parakeets fill the sky in an explosion of sound and color. You’ll enjoy breakfast with a view of this natural spectacle.
On our return, we stop at a research checkpoint and a local Amazon museum, where you’ll learn about the Tambopata-Candamo Reserve and its incredible biodiversity.
In the afternoon, enjoy a jungle walk with your guide to explore native flora and fauna, followed by a delicious dinner. At night, join a guided jungle walk to encounter frogs, tarantulas, snakes, butterflies, and night monkeys.
Day 3: Artisanal Fishing, Mammal Clay Lick & Amazon Legends by Campfire
After breakfast, we take a short boat ride to Gato Stream for traditional fishing — catch catfish, sabalos, paco, and more.
Next, we hike deep into the jungle and stop at a crystal-clear stream for a refreshing swim in pristine Amazon waters.
In the afternoon, visit a mammal clay lick, where species like howler monkeys, deer, and wild pigs feed on mineral-rich clay to aid digestion. This is a fantastic opportunity to see larger mammals up close.
Dinner is followed by a campfire storytelling session, where your guide shares local myths and legends of the Amazon. Overnight at the lodge.
Day 4: Tambopata Lodge to Lake Sandoval Lodge
After an early breakfast, we return by boat to Puerto Maldonado, pick up stored luggage, and continue our journey to Lake Sandoval in the Madre de Dios River.
We’ll register at the Sandoval checkpoint and hike 5 km through the jungle to reach a narrow, winding canal. A canoe ride brings us to Lake Sandoval Lodge.
After lunch, explore the lake in a paddle canoe, spotting giant river otters, black caimans, shanshos, and herons.
After dinner, return to the lake for a night canoeing adventure. With a flashlight, spot nocturnal animals such as monkeys, alligators, and night birds. Overnight at Sandoval Lodge.
Day 5: Collpa de Palmeras & Return to Puerto Maldonado
We begin the day early with a canoe ride to Guacamayo Palmera (Palm Clay Lick) — a swampy area rich in palm fruits that attract macaws and parrots in large flocks.
Then, we take a jungle walk to discover the Amazonian primary forest, where you’ll encounter towering chestnut trees, medicinal plants (ayahuasca, chacruna, chuchuhuasi, etc.), and species like monkeys, sloths, armadillos, and more.
After lunch, we prepare for our return, paddling across Lake Sandoval, hiking back to the checkpoint, and finally boarding a motorboat to Puerto Maldonado. There, we’ll collect our luggage and transfer you to the airport or bus terminal.
