Day 1: Arrival to Puerto Maldonato and Explore in Amazon Wildlife Sandoval lake .
Your Amazon adventure begins with a warm welcome at Puerto Maldonado Airport, followed by a scenic drive to the Tambopata River boat dock. From here, we board a motorized canoe, cruising to the confluence with the Madre de Dios River, a major Amazon tributary. Sandoval Lake
After a 30-minute journey downriver, we reach the landing point leading to Sandoval Lake. Here, you’ll embark on a 3-km (2-mile) jungle trail, stopping frequently to observe vibrant birds, butterflies, and other forest life.
Next, navigate a narrow canal by canoe through the flooded palm forests before arriving at the serene open waters of Sandoval Lake.
Your boat crew will row silently across the lake to the lodge, respecting the motor-free policy to maintain this fragile ecosystem.
Beneath the water’s surface, you may glimpse the enormous Paiche fish, weighing up to 100 kg (220 lbs). Keep your ears open for the eerie calls and watch for the unmistakable heads of the Giant Otters surfacing for air—your first magical encounter with these endangered mammals.
As afternoon turns to evening, we take a boat excursion along the eastern end of the lake. The sounds of hundreds of Blue-and-Yellow Macaws and Red-Breasted Macaws herald their return to the palm forests for the night, offering a spectacular display of color and wildlife activity. amazon sandoval lake .
The Capuchin Monkeys here are remarkably unafraid of humans, providing excellent photo opportunities as they play along the lake’s edge.
Dinner is served at the lodge, followed by a night boat tour in search of elusive caimans, which, though rare elsewhere in the Amazon, remain relatively abundant here in this protected sanctuary.
Day 2: Sunrise Wildlife Watching and Rainforest Exploration
Start your day with a breathtaking Amazon sunrise on Sandoval Lake, one of the best times to spot active Giant Otters as they hunt and play in family groups.
Early risers will also enjoy close views of birds fishing and the unique Hoatzin or “shansho” bird feeding on leaves—a rare sight.
After a hearty breakfast, embark on a guided walk through the cool understory of the primary rainforest surrounding the lake.
Discover towering Chestnut trees and learn about the vital role these forests play in the Amazon’s ecology.
In the afternoon, explore the west side of the lake, where diverse monkey species including the Capuchin Monkey are frequently observed.
Before dinner, enjoy an educational video presentation on the Peruvian Amazon and its conservation. Another night walk or boat ride offers more chances to spot the mysterious caimans and listen to the symphony of nocturnal rainforest sounds.
Day 3: Medicinal Plants and Departure
Today is your chance to deepen your understanding of the Amazon’s botanical wonders. After breakfast, hike a special medicinal plant trail where your naturalist guide explains the traditional uses of many native plants.
See the Pamicho plant, used for thatched roofs, the anti-inflammatory Ginger candle, and the life-saving Cinchona tree, source of quinine.
After lunch and some rest, take a final boat ride through the palm swamps and calm waters of Sandoval Lake, soaking in the reflections of the jungle at sunrise.
