This short but immersive trip combines forest hikes, tranquil canoe rides, and night excursions, making it perfect for
travelers seeking an authentic Amazon rainforest experience in a limited time frame.
Day 1: Puerto Maldonado to Sandoval Lake
Your adventure begins upon arrival at Puerto Maldonado Airport, where our friendly staff will greet you and transfer you to the Tambopata River boat dock.
From here, board a motorized canoe and enjoy a scenic 30-minute journey to the confluence of the Madre de Dios River, one of the Amazon’s main tributaries.
Next, embark on a 3-kilometer (2-mile) jungle trail, pausing to observe vibrant birds and butterflies along the way.
The trail leads to a narrow canal surrounded by flooded Mauritia palm forests. Here, our crew will row you silently
across Sandoval Lake in motor-free boats, preserving the lake’s tranquil atmosphere.
Under the water, spot the massive Paiche fish, and listen for the distinctive calls of the Giant River Otters—your first chance to observe these remarkable creatures in the wild.
In the late afternoon, take a boat excursion along the eastern shore of the lake. Listen for the squawks of Blue-and-Yellow and Red-Breasted Macaws as they return to roost in the palms, and enjoy close encounters with playful
Capuchin Monkeys, who are unusually unafraid of humans here.
Return to the lodge at dusk for a delicious dinner. Afterwards, join a guided night boat ride to search for caimans,
rare but still thriving in this protected environment. Amazon rainforest
