The Amazon Travel Treehouse 3 days
One of the highlights of the tour will be a visit to the macaw clay lick. In Quechua, “collpa” (or “qolpa”) means salt-rich lands or mineral licks. In the context of the Amazon rainforest, a collpa is a place where numerous animals—especially birds like macaws, but also mammals and primates—gather each morning to consume mineral-rich clay. This clay helps them supplement their daily diet with essential minerals and salts.
Day 1: Arrival & Jungle Immersion
Meet your guide in Puerto Maldonado, shop for essentials, then travel 90 minutes by road and 30 minutes by boat to Collpa Chuncho Suites. Settle into your private cabaña surrounded by rainforest. Enjoy a guided nature walk spotting monkeys, macaws, toucans, and medicinal plants. At night, explore the jungle on a flashlight walk to discover nocturnal wildlife before a delicious dinner and restful night.
Day 2: Macaw Clay Lick, Fishing & Night Safari
Rise early for a boat ride to the spectacular Macaw Clay Lick, witnessing hundreds of colorful parrots feeding at sunrise. After breakfast, enjoy a jungle hike and try traditional piranha fishing at a blackwater lake. In the evening, embark on a night river safari to spot caimans and other nocturnal creatures under the starry Amazon sky. Return for dinner and a peaceful night in your cabaña.
Day 3: Farewell & Return
After breakfast, check out and journey back to Puerto Maldonado by boat and vehicle with your guide. Arrive in time for your onward flight, bus, or hotel transfer, concluding your immersive Amazon adventure.
The Macaw Clay Lick: A Natural Spectacle
One of the most breathtaking moments of this tour is the visit to a macaw clay lick. In Quechua, “collpa” or “qolpa” means salty soil. These natural formations attract birds such as macaws, parrots, and parakeets every morning, as well as mammals and primates, all drawn to the mineral-rich clay that is essential for their diet.
Witnessing this phenomenon is a unique experience and a powerful connection to the Amazon’s cycle of life.
