Amazon Rainforest Tour: 4-Day Jungle Adventure in Tambopata, Peru

Collpa Chuncho Suites & Sandoval Lake Expedition

DAY 1: Arrival in Puerto Maldonado – Journey to Collpa Chuncho Suites

Your Amazon jungle adventure begins in Puerto Maldonado, where your expert local guide will greet you at the airport, bus terminal, or your hotel. After a short stop in the city center for essentials like flashlights, rain ponchos, or batteries, we’ll set off toward the remote heart of the Amazon.

Enjoy a scenic 90-minute drive through lush farms and rural landscapes to Filadelfia, a riverside community where your journey continues by motorboat on the Tambopata River. During the 30-minute boat ride, watch for riverbank activity, including wildlife and local gold miners working along the shores.

Upon arrival at Collpa Chuncho Suites, you’ll check in at the main house and be welcomed with a refreshing local

juice. Settle into your private jungle cabaña, each named after a local Indigenous group, and prepare for your first rainforest experience.

 Jungle Introduction Walk

This afternoon, join a guided walk through the surrounding jungle trails. Learn about the uses of native plants, spot

monkeys, toucans, and macaws (locally called guacamayos), and begin to understand the rich ecological networks of the Amazon.

 Night Walk Experience

After dinner, return to the jungle for a guided night walk. Listen to the jungle come alive after dark as you search for

night monkeys, frogs, snakes, owls, and other nocturnal wildlife.

Relax after your jungle dinner with a Peruvian beer or jungle cocktail, and drift off to sleep to the sounds of the rainforest.

DAY 2: Collpa Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick – Tree Walk – Caiman Night Safari

Sunrise at the Macaw Clay Lick

Wake early for a sunrise boat trip to Collpa Chuncho, one of the most vibrant macaw clay licks in the Amazon. After registering at the ranger station, enjoy a boxed breakfast while observing hundreds of macaws, parrots, parakeets, and toucans as they gather at the mineral-rich clay wall—an unforgettable natural spectacle.

Return to the lodge for some rest or a peaceful walk around the grounds.

 Jungle Tree Walk

In the afternoon, embark on an interpretive walk through primary and secondary rainforest. Discover towering trees

like ceiba, ironwood, and the garlic tree, and learn how these species support local life and medicine. A great

opportunity to appreciate the rainforest’s crucial role in global biodiversity and climate balance.

 Caiman Night River Safari

After dinner, board a boat for a night safari along the Tambopata River. Spot caimans, nocturnal birds, capybaras, and more. On clear nights, gaze at the star-filled Amazonian sky and try to identify constellations like Orion’s Belt and the Southern Cross.

Return to the lodge for lunch and some downtime.

 Tapir Clay Lick Adventure

Later, hike for about an hour through the forest to reach Collpa de Sachavaca—a clay lick frequented by tapirs, the largest land mammals in the Amazon wildlife peru

Weighing up to 330 kg (730 lbs), these elusive animals are often seen here. Along the way, you might also encounter

howler monkeys, woodpeckers, peccaries, and deer, and observe animal tracks left in the mud.

 Jungle Bonfire & Storytelling

DAY 4: Travel on the Amazonas Sandoval Lake – Giant Otters – Return to Puerto Maldonado

Reach the lake after a 40-minute boat ride and a 3-kilometer jungle walk. Along the way, spot wildlife including red

howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, capuchins, and dusky titi monkeys.

Check in to your partner eco-lodge near the lake, then return to the water in time for a magnificent sunset. After

dark, paddle out to look for black caimans, which can grow over 4 meters long, illuminated by your guide’s flashlight.

Spend the night at the eco-lodge in the reserve.
