Amazon Wildlife Trip – 3 Days

Amazon Wildlife Trip  :The Amazon rainforest is one of the world’s most surprising natural paradises, home to one of the largest concentrations of endemic birds and butterflies found in the lowlands. In particular, Tambopata and Sandoval Lake offer one of the most exciting and unique Amazonian experiences in our Peruvian Amazon.

For example, visitors can spot the giant river otter, also known as the “river wolf.” Sadly, this species is endangered. Its preferred diet includes fish, turtles, and the black caiman. Moreover, Sandoval Lake is home to a vast diversity of species, which call it their habitat.

In addition to the otters, the lake also hosts the vibrant blue and gold macaws and the red-bellied macaws. These species live naturally in the flooded palm forest at the west end of Lake Sandoval. The surrounding forests are also home to several species of monkeys, including the brown capuchin, friar, red howler monkey, and more. Additionally, you may encounter the Bolivian squirrel monkey, known for its agility.

Day 1: Amazon Wildlife Trip Puerto Maldonado to Lake Sandoval Reserve .

Upon arrival, we will pick you up from the airport or bus station and transfer you to our office. Here, you can register and leave any extra luggage behind, taking only what you need for the tour. Then, we will proceed to the port to board the outboard boat, beginning our journey down the Alto Madre de Dios River. Along the way, you’ll have the chance to observe some species along the riverbank, such as turtles sunbathing on fallen trunks and migratory fishing birds. If you’re lucky, you may even spot the largest rodent in the world, the capybara.

At the control post of  Visit Lake Sandoval   , we will register before starting our 3-kilometer walk into the deep jungle. Afterward, we’ll arrive at a small port, where we’ll board a canoe to paddle through a snake-shaped channel. The boat ride will take about 50 minutes, crossing the lake to reach the lodge.

At the Sandoval Lake Lodge, you will enjoy a comfortable room and a delicious lunch. Enjoy Wildlife

In the afternoon, we will explore Lake Sandoval by canoe, where you can observe wildlife such as the giant otter family (also known as the river wolf), black caimans, prehistoric birds, turtles, and many species of birds. Later, we will return to the lodge for dinner.

As night falls, we will embark on a nocturnal canoe trip on the lake. Equipped with flashlights, we will seek out nocturnal creatures such as black caimans, night birds, and monkeys along the riverbanks. Once the activity concludes, we’ll return to the lodge to rest in our rooms.

Day 2: Sandoval Lake Reserve Center

Today, we’ll wake up early to the songs of the birds. After a hearty breakfast, we’ll have another opportunity to visit Sandoval Lake Reserve, where we can observe species we didn’t see the day before. The lake is home to more than 65 species of migratory and resident birds, including aquatic species that feed on fish. You may also spot the giant otter family, small alligators sunbathing on dry trunks, and macaws feeding on protein-rich palm fruits.

Afterward, we’ll return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll head into the cool undergrowth of the virgin forest to explore towering nut trees (chestnuts). Locals harvest these nuts for the market, and we’ll learn about other healing plants like ayahuasca, chacruna, and sacha garlic.

While exploring, we may encounter various species of monkeys, such as the brown capuchin, squirrel monkey, and howler monkey, along with other fascinating creatures like tarantulas, frogs, and mammals such as armadillos and sloths.

In the evening, we’ll enjoy dinner at the lodge, followed by a night walk through the virgin forest. Here, we’ll have the chance to spot mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, and nocturnal monkeys as they hunt for food.

Afterward, we’ll head back to the lodge to rest.

Day 3: Amazon Wildlife Trip to Puerto Maldonado / Airport / Bus Stations

On the final day of our Amazon adventure, we will say goodbye to the jungle. After breakfast, we’ll pack our belongings and start our return journey along the same route. We’ll board the canoe again and paddle back across the lake to the port, where we’ll begin the walk back to the control post.

Once we reach the control post, our outboard boat will be waiting to take us back up the Madre de Dios River, heading toward Puerto Maldonado. Upon arrival, we will transfer you to our office to collect any remaining luggage. Finally, we’ll take you to the airport or bus terminal, marking the end of your unforgettable Amazon Wildlife Trip Peru .
