4-Day Amazon Tour Itinerary Amazon Trip Peru Sandoval Lake : Macaw Clay Lick 4 days

Day 1: Puerto Maldonado – Sandoval Lake

Your adventure begins with your arrival in Puerto Maldonado, where our team will meet you at the airport, hotel or bus station.

From the city, we will head to the pier to begin our journey along the Madre de Dios River. After approximately 30 minutes of navigation, we will reach the point where our hike to Sandoval Lake begins.

We will walk approximately 3 kilometers through the Amazon rainforest. Along the way, our guide will help us identify different species of birds, butterflies, trees and other forms of life that inhabit the rainforest.

Upon reaching the lake, we will continue by small canoe through the channels until we reach the open waters of Sandoval Lake. Depending on conditions and conservation regulations, travel within the lake is done using paddles, allowing us to enjoy the surroundings with minimal impact.

Sandoval Lake is one of the most representative destinations within Tambopata National Reserve. Its waters and surrounding forests are home to an extraordinary variety of species.

With patience and careful observation, we may look for giant river otters, monkeys, aquatic birds, caimans and different species of fish, while also enjoying the spectacular rainforest scenery.

In the afternoon, we will explore the surroundings of the lake again. The area offers excellent opportunities for bird and primate watching, as well as nature photography.

After dinner, we will embark on a nighttime excursion, during which we will look for caimans and other species that become active after sunset.

Day 2: Sunrise at Sandoval Lake and Rainforest Hike

We will start early to enjoy sunrise over Sandoval Lake. The first hours of the morning are particularly interesting for wildlife observation, as many species begin their activities with the first rays of sunlight.

With a little luck, we may observe giant river otters moving through the lake, as well as different species of birds approaching the water to feed.

We may also look for the hoatzin, or shansho, a distinctive Amazonian bird commonly found near wetlands and bodies of water.

After breakfast, we will begin an interpretive hike through the primary rainforest. Our guide will explain the characteristics of the Amazon ecosystem and help us identify trees, medicinal plants, palm trees and other plant species.

Among the vegetation, we may encounter different species of monkeys, birds, insects, amphibians and reptiles.

In the afternoon, we will continue exploring another section of Sandoval Lake and its surroundings, taking advantage of the best opportunities to photograph wildlife and scenery.

After dinner, we may take another hike or nighttime excursion, depending on weather conditions and the scheduled activities.

At night, the rainforest takes on a completely different atmosphere: the sounds of insects, amphibians, nocturnal birds and other animals accompany us along the trail.

Day 3: Amazon Trip Peru Sandoval Lake : Macaw Clay Lick

After breakfast, we will make one final exploration of the surroundings of Sandoval Lake before beginning our return journey.

We will return to the control post and continue navigating along the Madre de Dios River to Puerto Maldonado.

From the city, we will begin a new stage of our Peruvian Amazon expedition, traveling toward the Tambopata River.

During the journey, we may observe different species of birds and wildlife along the riverbanks. Depending on the season and viewing conditions, there is a possibility of seeing capybaras, Amazonian turtles, monkeys and other species.

Upon arrival at the lodge, we will enjoy a traditional welcome drink and a lunch prepared with local ingredients.

In the afternoon, we will take a guided hike through the Tambopata rainforest. The trail will allow us to discover large trees, plants traditionally used by local communities, and a great diversity of insects, butterflies, frogs and birds.

As night falls, we will begin a nighttime boat excursion to look for caimans, night monkeys and other nocturnal species.

This experience allows us to discover a different side of the rainforest, when most daytime visitors have already returned to the lodge.

Day 4: Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick – Puerto Maldonado

Our final day begins very early. We will navigate along the Tambopata River toward one of the most spectacular birdwatching sites in the region: the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick.

The clay lick is a gathering site for different species of parrots and macaws that visit the clay walls. Depending on weather conditions and bird activity, we may observe large groups of macaws, parrots and parakeets gathered in this impressive natural setting.

While enjoying breakfast overlooking the Amazonian landscape, our guide will explain the importance of clay licks and the behavior of the birds that visit them.

After the activity, we will return to the lodge to collect our luggage and enjoy lunch.

Finally, we will begin our journey back to Puerto Maldonado, where we will transfer you to the airport, hotel or bus station.
